Frederick H. Decker of 347 Iradell Road, Ithaca, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, September 26, 2011 at the age of 74.

 

Born in Seneca Falls on August 19, 1937, Fred was the son of the late Donald and Leora (VanMarter) Decker. He graduated from Trumansburg High School in 1956, and in 1954 began serving in the Naval Reserves as a 2nd Class Radio Man until 1962. Fred was a member of the Trumansburg Fire Department for several years before attending Practical Bible School from 1971-1974 where he strengthened his already deep faith. He and his wife made their home in Ithaca where he worked as a lab technician for Cornell University and served as a deputy for the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Department.

 

Following his retirement, he volunteered at the Trumansburg Middle School for 7 years. In his quiet time, he enjoyed listening to hymns of faith and gospel music.

 

Fred’s strong faith evident to everyone who knew him and was shown through his dedication to Calvary Baptist Church. He served the Awana Clubs for 21 years leading the children in song and teaching them lessons from the Bible. Fred also was a youth director for Eastgate Youth Ministries for several years.

 

In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Hopphaus. He is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth Decker of Ithaca; a son William (Jamie) Decker of Ithaca; two grandchildren, Nicole and Katelyn Decker; and a sister, Marian (Fred) Bleiler of Rochester.

 

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, October 1, 2011 at Calvary Baptist Church, 5 Bradley Street, Trumansburg with Pastor Tim Hamilton officiating. Prayers of Committal will immediately follow in Grove Cemetery.
