Frances F. "Flossie" HeathwaiteFrances F. “Flossie” Heathwaite of 9558 Rt. 89, Trumansburg passed away peacefully at the Evergreen House in Jacksonville on Friday, March 4, 2011 at the age of 92.

Born on February 7, 1919 in Syracuse, New York, Flossie was the daughter of Elwin and Anna (Horton) Ford. Shortly after graduating from the Trumansburg High School in 1936, Flossie was courted by Hewart H. Heathwaite. Flossie’s large family welcomed Hewart with open arms, and the couple were married on January 21, 1939 at the Ford family home on Gorge Road in Trumansburg. With a gentle and nurturing soul, Flossie took pride in raising her family. She served as a Cub Mother, was active with her daughters in Girl Scouts, and shared an enthusiasm for sports with all of her children. Many warm memories were made at their cottage on Cayuga Lake, especially paddling down the moonbeam at night with Hewart opposite her in the canoe. In later years she enjoyed following the Olympics, golf, and baseball on TV.

Holding a baby caused Flossie to melt in an instant. The birth of each child, grandchild and great-grandchild brought immense joy to her life. After the children were grown, Flossie worked at the Borg-Warner Credit Union, devoted more time to gardening, and served as a member of Heart Mates while Hewart was treasurer.  She valued the friendships made through membership in the Jacksonville Community United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.

In addition to her parents and several siblings, Flossie was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Hewart, on July 25, 2002; one son, Donald in 1989 and a daughter-in-law, Connie. She is survived by three sons, Bruce of Glenmont, Steve (Carol) of Austin, Arkansas and Ed of Brattleboro, VT; two daughters, Joan (Chuck) Plant of Trumansburg and Dianna (Larry) Bopp of Guilderland; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one sister, Muriel Bryant of Groton and many nieces and nephews.

The family will be present to receive friends from 1-2 pm on Thursday, March 10, 2011 at the Ness-Sibley Funeral Home, 23 South St, Trumansburg. A Memorial Service will begin at 3:30 pm on Thursday, March 10th at the Jacksonville Community United Methodist Church.

The family asks those who wish to make a contribution in Flossie’s memory to kindly consider the Jacksonville Community United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 244, Jacksonville, NY 14854 or the Classen Home Health Associates, 310 Taughannock Blvd, Suite 1B, Ithaca, NY 14850.
