Iona M. Westervelt, of Interlaken, passed away at Seneca View Nursing Facility, surrounded by her family on Sunday, February, 27, 2011 at the age of 88.

Iona was born on September 21, 1922 in Wells, Pennsylvania, a daughter of the late Albert and Marion (Sturdevant) Cooper. She graduated from Ovid High School in 1940 and shortly after married the love of her life, Howard A. Westervelt. Iona lived in the Interlaken area her entire life. Iona was employed at the Willard Psychiatric Center for several years. From 1971 to 1981, Iona and Howard owned and operated the Community Manor Home for Adults on Main Street in Interlaken. No stranger to hard work, Iona and her husband assisted their son, J.R., at J.R.’s County Custom Cutting for over 20 years. She spent the greater portion of her later years working in homes as a caregiver to ailing elderly area residents. She was a member of the Interlaken Fire Department Auxiliary and the Trumansburg Senior Citizens.

A selfless woman, Iona gave tirelessly to those around her, including the residents of Community Manor, all of whom she considered as family. The passion and love for her own family was boundless. She enjoyed cooking delicious homemade meals and crocheting many cherished items for them. Iona also enjoyed reading western romance novels, doing crossword puzzles, and keeping daily journals of family activities.

In addition to her parents, Iona was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Howard A. Westervelt on June 28, 1999; a brother, Leon Cooper; a son-in-law Curt Harrington; and a grandson-in-law, Ken Strothmann. She is survived by a daughter, Sandra Harrington of Trumansburg; a son, Howard “J.R.” (Sue Powell) Westervelt, Jr. of Interlaken; four granddaughters, Jyll Strothmann, Robyn (Don) Poulsen, Jennifer (Todd) Porter, and Stacey (Tom) Lavarnway; two great-grandsons, Steven and Nicholas Poulsen; a sister, Sherol (Tracy) Rosbaugh of Slatedale, PA; a sister-in-law, Martha Troutman of Ovid; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will be present to receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00pm on Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at the Ness-Sibley Funeral Home, 23 South Street, Trumansburg.
