Dorothy F. “Dottie” Sears passed away on Sunday, November 26, 2023 at the age of 93.
Dorothy was born on May 24, 1930, to Mary Wilkin Sears and Glenn Sears, who resided on Wilkins Road in the Town of Ulysses. Dorothy was one of eight children which included two older brothers, four older sisters, and one younger sister. All the Sears children were born at home in the same home their mother was born in, part of a working farm. Dorothy is predeceased by her beloved life partner of 51 years, Bruce Scoon, in God’s promise of eternal life after death. Bruce passed away on Christmas Eve in 2006. She was also preceded in death by siblings, Mildred Sears, Marjorie Sears, Charlie Sears, Rena Lilly, Edith Nyenhuis, Glenn Sears, and Winifred Simpkins. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Dorothy graduated from Trumansburg Central High School in 1949. She lived at home until the age of 20, then moved to Ithaca to take a job. She was employed by Tompkins Trust Company as a bookkeeper for 35 years.
Dorothy met the love of her life, Bruce Scoon in November 1955 on a blind date when they went square dancing in Cortland. Dorothy like to say that she and Bruce never had an argument and she adored him. She and Bruce enjoyed watching NASCAR races and Dorothy took notes on every race and every driver for many years. Dorothy was an accomplished seamstress and made many of her own clothes. She enjoyed participating on a bowling team for Tompkins Trust and maintained an average somewhere around 140…..pretty good! Dorothy and Bruce traveled to Florida numerous times during their years together. She also traveled with her niece, Mary, to visit the Grand Ole Opry Show in Nashville. Over the years, Dorothy and Bruce adopted two cats, Dennis and Scamper, and greatly enjoyed the company they provided.
In keeping with Dorothy’s wishes, burial will be private for family at the No. 9 Cemetery in Seneca County.
The family asks those to make a contribution in Dorothy’s memory to kindly consider Tompkins County SPCA, 1640 Hanshaw Road, Ithaca, NY 14850 or the Salvation Army.
