James V. Whittaker

James V. “Jim” Whittaker of Enfield passed away at home surrounded by family on Thursday, September 24, 2026 at the age of 87. He lived a life marked by steadfast service, hard work, and deep commitment to the people and communities around him.

Born on April 12, 1939 in Ithaca, Jim was a son of the late Richard G. and Phyllis E. (Williams) Whittaker. He served in the United States Army from 1962 to 1964, a chapter of his life that reflected the sense of duty that would remain with him for many years to come.

Jim devoted more than 50 years of his working life to NCR in Ithaca where he worked as an assembler. He was a very dedicated firefighter and EMT, and as a lifetime member of the Enfield Fire Department, he gave generously of his time and energy. He was also a member of FASNY and a former director of the CNY Fireman's Association. As an EMT, Jim rarely missed a call, a reflection of how seriously he took the responsibility of helping others in moments of need. He also served as a firefighter for Watkins Glen track services. Outside of his work and service, Jim enjoyed hunting and NASCAR.

Jim is survived by his wife of 45 years, Pam Whittaker; five children, Benjamin (Vicky) Whittaker, Kevin (Sheryl) Whittaker, Wayde (Cindy) Whittaker, Andrea (Thomas) Scheitrum, and Lori (Dustin Myers) Barriere; grandchildren, Weston Whittaker, Savannah Whittaker, Caitlyn Whittaker, Kristin (Jacob) Brown, Evan Whittaker, Teagen Dibert, Skylar Price, Michael Brierley, and Laurel Brierley; great grandchildren, Lyric Autry, Brayden Whittaker, Adam Whittaker, Oliver Brown, Madeline Brown, and Kinsley Walters; siblings, Ann VanDeMark, Thomas Whittaker, and Bruce Whittaker; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Erin Whittaker.
