Judith Diane Hughes of Ithaca, passed away peacefully at home on September 15, 2025, surrounded by her beloved family at the age of 79.
Born on July 25, 1946, in Auburn, California to the late Benjamin and Helen (Hartzell) Strickland, Judy lived a life rich in love and service both to her family and community. In her professional life, Judy served as a school bus driver for the Ithaca City School District, a role that allowed her to connect with children and contribute to their daily lives.
Judy’s strong faith guided her through life; she actively participated in her church community, previously serving as President of the Relief Society, Director of the Family History Center, and holding other leadership roles. Her commitment to service was evident in her many camping trips planned for her family to the picturesque Adirondacks. A woman of many gifts, Judy was renowned for her great sense of humor and her innate ability to connect with people from all walks of life. She loved cooking and had a special place in her heart for her pets. Throughout her life, Judy also embraced the role of a foster parent, providing care and support for many children over the years, further demonstrating her selfless nature and dedication to nurturing.
She was a devoted mother and grandmother who cherished the family traditions and celebrations that she fostered throughout her years. She was the rock of her family, always ensuring that holiday gatherings were held at her home, where laughter and joy resonated.
Judy is survived by her husband of 62 years, Patrick Hughes; three children, Jon (Carole) Hughes, Amanda (Arel) LeMaro, and Aaron (Nadine) Hughes; and four grandchildren, Andrew and Danny Hughes, and Olivia and Daniel LeMaro.
In addition to her parents Judy was preceded in death by her daughters, Theresa and Penny; and a granddaughter, Amanda.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, September 27, 2025 at 12:30pm at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints,114 Burleigh Drive, Ithaca.
