Ithaca

Richard J. Westervelt of Ithaca passed away suddenly due to unexpected health complications on December 10, 2025, at Guthrie Cortland Hospital at the age of 71.

He was born on July 24, 1954, in Ithaca, New York, the oldest son to Richard K. and Beverly (Bennett) Westervelt. After graduating from Charles O. Dickerson High School in Trumansburg, Richard embarked on a career that began with Ithaca Gun. He later joined Morse Chain as a machinist, ultimately retiring from Emerson after many years of service. Post-retirement, Richard continued to work full-time at BJ's, where he assumed the role of tire department manager for several years.

Richard found great joy in the outdoors. He was an avid woodsman and nurtured a love for animals, dedicating his time to care for numerous dogs and cats. He was very proud of his hobby farm where he raised hens and grew vegetables.

Richard is survived by his son, Nicholas Westervelt; stepdaughter, Kimberly Updike; mother, Beverly Westervelt; siblings, Pamela Blass, Mark (Linda) Westervelt, and Darrick Westervelt; life companion, Winona Marino and her grandson, Gabriel Alexander-Tejero; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Westervelt; sister, Joyce Worrell; brother-in-law, Rick Blass Jr; and nephews, Nathan and Jeffrey Blass.

A Celebration of his Life will be announced in the Spring.
