Dorothy J. "Dottie" Scott

Dorothy J. "Dottie" Scott  passed away at her home in Waxhaw, NC on October 10, 2022 at the age of 85. 

Born in Englewood, NJ on April 29, 1937, she was the daughter of the late George H. Van Valen and Ethel Lewis Van Valen. Dottie moved to Trumansburg, NY in 1944 and graduated from Trumansburg High School in 1954. After completing her Associate in Applied Science degree from Ithaca College, she married Robert G. Scott in 1956. Dottie was a fan of Big Red hockey, football and other sports at Cornell University where she retired after 30 years of service in the Department of Athletics as an administrative aide.

Music was an important part of Dottie’s life. She was a member of the chancel choir and played handbells for St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Ithaca, NY and also enjoyed her participation in the Ithaca Community Chorus and the Harmony Falls women’s barbershop chorus. During her winters in Florida, she sang with the Spring Hill United Methodist Church choir and participated in their handbell choir. In addition to music, Dottie enjoyed traveling to many locations all over the world, reading, golfing, gardening and needlework. 

Dottie is survived by her husband, Robert; three children, Trudy (Thomas) Ives of Atlanta, GA, Thomas Scott and Susan (Robert) Vasaturo of Charlotte, NC. She treasured her five grandchildren: Lindsay and Geoffrey Ives, Robert Scott, and Alexis and Cady Vasaturo. Additional survivors include her sisters-in-law, Chloe Van Valen and Patty Scott, several cousins and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, brother, George E. Van Valen, and special cousin, Jeanne Brandis. 

The family will be present to receive friends on Friday, November 11, 2022 from 1:00-2:30 PM at Ness-Sibley Funeral Home 23 South Street, Trumansburg. Committal prayers will immediately follow at Grove Cemetery, Trumansburg.
