Hugh Hurlbut Obituary

Hugh Hurlbut, lifelong resident of Ithaca passed away peacefully on April 6, 2021 in Jacksonville, Florida at the age of 91.

Hugh was born on February 16, 1930 in Battle Creek, Michigan, a son of the late Henry and Connie Hurlbut. He graduated from high school and joined the United States Army in 1951, honorably serving his country during World War II. Hugh met his wife, Lois Hurd, and the two were married on April 6, 1954.

A majority of Hugh’s career was spent working for Tompkins County where he would retire as the Personnel Director and Head of Human Resources.

Hugh had three main passions in his life rooting for Ithaca College football, Crescent Lake, and most of all, his family.

Hugh is survived by five children, Scott (Susan) Hurlbut, Marianne (Eric) Bastin, Darrel (Tammy) Hurlbut, H Greg (Melissa) Hurlbut, and Marc (Karen) Hurlbut; 10 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; two brothers, David (Jacquie) Hurlbut and Fred Hurlbut; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Hugh was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Hurlbut; a brother, Donald Hurlbut; and two sisters, Martha Wilder and Susan Jones.

In keeping with Hugh’s wishes, services were held privately for family.
