Sylvie Anna Ginenthal

Sylvie Anna Ginenthal of Ithaca passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, December 16, 2021 at the age of 37. 

Sylvie was born in Ithaca on May 10, 1984, a daughter to Leon Ginenthal and Renate Schmitt. She attended the Ithaca City School District and graduated from the Cascadilla School. Sylvie obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology and Anthropology from SUNY Albany in 2007, graduating Summa Cum Laude. She went on to graduate studies in Cultural Geography, attending both SUNY Albany and the University of Leeds in the UK. Sylvie worked for multiple places in the Ithaca community including Kamp/Devenpeck Dental, Cornell University in various departments, and the bakery departments at Wegmans and Greenstar.

Sylvie was brilliant, brave, and beautiful. While intensely private, she was kind, compassionate, politically conscious, and an eco-feminist. Sylvie found happiness in her pottery, gardening, jewelry making, and loving bond she had with her beloved nephew, Oliver.

Sylvie is survived by her parents, Lee Ginenthal and Renate Schmitt; brother, Jules (Jeanne Grace) Ginenthal; nephew, Oliver Ginenthal; paternal grandmother, Audrey Ginenthal; aunts and uncles, Marlene Ginenthal, Cheryl (Edward) Wheat-Schmidt, Gabriele (Tony Livreri) Schmitt, Roland (Kirsten Rohrs) Schmitt, Gerhard (Alejandra) Schmitt, and Barbara Schmitt; and numerous cousins. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, David Ginenthal; and maternal grandparents, Horst and Inge Schmitt.

A Graveside Service will be held at 1:00pm on Tuesday, December 21, 2021 at Greensprings Natural Cemetery Preserve. A Celebration of Life will be announced in the Spring.
