Thomas G. Reed

Thomas G. Reed of Trumansburg passed away at Cayuga Medical Center on Monday, May 1, 2023 at the age of 73, having been closely held during his final days there by his loving family.

He was born on May 24, 1949 a son of the late Alfred “Hick” and Helen (Pedersen) Reed. Tom graduated from Trumansburg High School in 1968 and played all four sports, especially excelling at basketball and was team co-captain. During his high school years, Tom also worked part-time for the Trumansburg Home Telephone Company. After graduating high school, Tom entered the United States Army, stationed at Fort Carson in Colorado where he attained the rank of Sergeant. After receiving an honorable discharge, he returned home to take a position as a Deputy Sheriff for the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Department. Soon after, he returned to work at the phone company as a lineman where he would serve the Trumansburg area communities in this capacity until his retirement in 2003. In his retirement, Tom spent 12 years on Pine Island during the winter.

Always working hard to support his family, in addition to his phone company work, Tom also co-owned a busy tree cutting service, sold cars for Gow Chevrolet, and owned and operated Kingtown Beach Cottages, with his wife Jill, for many years which led to his love of spending time on Cayuga Lake. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, was an avid golfer, and was a member of American Legion Post 770 in Trumansburg for 52 years. Even while juggling many work demands, Tom’s passion was also watching his children and nephews play sports in high school and college. He was always an avid fan and parent on the sidelines. In his later years, more than anything, Tom loved catching up with old friends and spending time with his grandchildren.

Tom is survived by his wife, Jill Reed; five children, Joseph Charles (Kristi) Mikula, Geoffrey Thomas (Carroll) Reed, Jaclyne Lee (Steven) Schettino, Molly Christine (Michael) VanHorn, and Damon Wesley (Erika) Reed; seven grandchildren, Ayden and Eyan, Deegan, Lenora, and Amalia, Alivia, and Wesley; brother Jack (Catherine) Reed; nephews, Michael (Monica) Reed and John (Vanessa) Reed; great niece, Gabriella; and several cousins.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 13, 2023 from 1:00 to 4:00pm at the Trumansburg Golf Course. 

In lieu of flowers, the family asks those to make a donation in Tom’s memory to the Trumansburg Central School District, 100 Whig Street, Trumansburg, NY 14886 with the memo line reading “In Memory of Tom Reed - Athletic Department.”
